Tests and Results
How and when to obtain test results from the surgery
Blood Tests
A blood test is when a sample of blood is taken for testing in a laboratory. Blood tests have a wide range of uses and are one of the most common types of medical test. For example, a blood test can be used to:
- assess your general state of health
- confirm the presence of a bacterial or viral infection
- see how well certain organs, such as the liver and kidneys, are functioning
A blood test usually involves the phlebotomist taking a blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm and the usual place for a sample is the inside of the elbow or wrist, where the veins are relatively close to the surface.
Getting Your Results
If you have the NHS App then your test results are stored and are viewable in the App under Your GP Health Record. For more information about the app and viewable results please visit the NHS website
If you do not have the NHS App and wish to call the surgery then please call after 2pm as our reception staff will have more time to deal with your request then.
Any tests that have not been requested by a Nurse or GP will not be carried out. If you have been asked to provide a sample (urine, stool, sputum) these must be left at reception before 11.00am from Monday to Friday.
The person taking your test can advise you of approximate turnaround times for results to come in and we only release test results to the person to whom they relate (unless that person has given prior permission or they are not capable of understanding the results).
If your test result is normal then we will not contact you as we perform hundreds of tests each week. We will contact you for one of the following reasons:
- The test needs to be repeated
- You need to start or change treatment
- There is a problem with the result that we need to talk to you about
